I wanted to provide an update regarding Mobile phone theft, which some members around this area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the Met Engage priority survey. Dear Residents, We are acutely aware of the impact mobile phone snatching has on our community. In 2025, we are taking unprecedented steps through A New Met for London to dismantle the criminal networks driving these thefts. What We Are Doing: • Enhanced Search Powers: Under the Crime and Policing Bill 2025, officers can now enter and search premises without a court warrant if a stolen device is electronically geolocated to that address. This allows us to act within the "golden hour" to recover stolen property before it is moved or wiped. • Targeting Organized Crime: In October 2025, the Met dismantled an international smuggling ring responsible for up to 40% of London's phone thefts, seizing thousands of devices. We are no longer just chasing street-level snatchers but also the "handlers" and exporters. • E-Bike Seizures: We have seized over 2,500 illegal e-bikes and e-scooters in 2025—vehicles frequently used by snatchers for quick escapes. • Hotspot Patrols: We are deploying more plain-clothes and visible patrols in high-risk areas, such as transport hubs and busy city centers, to deter and catch offenders in the act. How You Can Protect Yourself: Thieves often target individuals who are distracted by their screens. To stay safe: • Be Aware of Surroundings: Avoid using your phone while walking, especially near roads or bike lanes where snatchers can quickly approach from behind. • Secure Your Data: Use biometrics (FaceID/Fingerprint) and set a unique passcode. Ensure "Message Previews" are turned off so thieves cannot see reset codes on your lock screen. • Register Your Device: Register your phone’s IMEI number at Immobilise. This helps us return your phone if it is recovered. • Note Your IMEI: Dial *#06# now and save your IMEI number somewhere safe. You will need this to report a theft and block the device. If Your Phone is Stolen: 1. Report it immediately online at met.police.uk or call 101. 2. Contact your network provider to blacklist the SIM and handset. 3. Notify your bank if you have banking apps or digital wallets on the device. Your safety is our priority. By combining new legal powers with community vigilance, we are working to make London’s streets safer for everyone.
We are working on our brand-new strategy for how we police London and we want your help. Our New Met for London: Phase 2 strategy will guide how we deliver on behalf of Londoners over the next three years. |
